Steel industry resolves to go greener
28 Nov 2009
The Indian steel industry reiterated its resolve to go greener by infusing green technologies at a two day seminar on Green Technologies in the Iron and Steel Industry. Mr ND Tewari governor of Andhra Pradesh inaugurated the seminar.
Setting the tone for the seminar, Mr KK Singhal executive director of Steel Authority of India Ltd said that Indian steel companies were increasingly going in for green technologies. This will reduce impact on the environment.
He said that SAIL which has undertaken INR 70000 crore expansion plan over the next few years, will be investing INR 3500 crore on environment related schemes and technologies.
India which is currently the fifth largest crude steel producer in the world, is slated to produce 110 million tonnes by 2019-20, but industry analysts feel that by 2011-12 the product could surpass this estimate.
In the steel industry, carbon dioxide emissions chiefly occur due to usage of fossil fuels and electricity in the manufacturing unit, with India accounting for 4.5% of the carbon dioxide emissions within the sector in the world. The domestic steel industry emits 2.5 to 3 tCO2 (total carbon dioxide) /tonne of steel produced against the world average of less than 2 tCO2 per tonne.
Various issues related to green technologies such as dry quenching of coke, carbon footprint, clean development mechanism, use of propane, new dust collecting processes and solid waste utilization will be discussed at the seminar.
