Crude steel production stats mirror economic crisis

ACCORDING to the World Steel Association, the November 2008 figures for world crude steel production have been collated, and indicate a 19% drop from November 2007.

The World Steel Association collects data from 66 countries. It found the total crude steel production was 89mmt in November 2008.

However, total world crude steel production was 1224.6mmt in the first 11 months of 2008, representing a 0.9% increase over the same period in 2007.

In November 2008, China produced 35.2mmt of crude steel, representing a 12.4% decrease on November 2007.

Overall, Asia produced 54.1mmt of crude steel in November 2008 compared to 61mmt in November 2007.
The EU saw a similar decline, with France leading the drop, showing a decrease of 29.1% from November 2007.
